The annual Australian Body Art Festival in Cooroy is nothing short of phenomenal. It’s a festival of colour and creativity and attracts thousands of spectators and competitors from across Australia. One of the signature events of the festival is the Bendigo Bank Wearable Art competition which sees artists of all ages create funky fashions from recycled materials.
“The Wearable Art competition really is a great opportunity for designers of all ages and experience to express their creativity,” says event manager, Danielle Taylor. “It’s a great chance to be really outlandish and use weird and wonderful up-cycled materials. We have everyone from primary school students to grand parents enter this competition and they are all amazing!”
Garments must be created from reused or second-hand materials – anything from recycled textiles to household goods to industrial or other discarded items. Judges look for creative edge and originality of material, so designers are encouraged to think outside the square when brainstorming their wearable art designs. The wearable art designs do not have to be practical or commercially viable, but they must be wearable on the catwalk at the event.
The naming rights sponsor for the 2019 Wearable Art competition is Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank with Sunny Coast Accountants and Original Eumundi Markets adding support through prize sponsorship. Thanks to their sponsorship there is $750 in cash and prizes up for grabs plus trophies. Entry to the Wearable Art competition is just $15 if paid during the early bird period which finishes on 4 February.
The theme for the 2019 Australian Body Art Festival is “Other Worlds” and it will be held on 6 & 7 April at Apex Park, Cooroy with a special opening night ticketed function on 5 April. As well as the awesome wearable art there is body and face painting, music, street performers, public art projects, a kids zone and lots of fun!
